This film was created for BBC StoryWorks in partnership with UCB and the WHO Foundation as part of the Healthier Together series, exploring initiatives that are improving access to healthcare and reducing stigma around the world.

This project follows the experiences of people living with epilepsy in Rwanda and the healthcare professionals working to transform understanding and access to care across the country.

At the center of the story is Beatrice, whose first epileptic symptoms were initially misunderstood and attributed to spiritual possession, reflecting the stigma and misinformation that still surround epilepsy in many communities. Through her journey, audiences witness the emotional and social impact of living with a misunderstood neurological condition, as well as the importance of education, medical support, and community awareness in changing perceptions.

The film highlights the work of neurologists, healthcare workers, and local organisations who are expanding access to diagnosis, treatment, and specialist training throughout Rwanda. By equipping families and communities with a better understanding of epilepsy, these initiatives are helping patients move beyond fear and isolation toward more independent and fulfilling lives.
