Created for BBC StoryWorks in partnership with Socodevi as part of a series exploring community-led solutions to environmental and social challenges around the world. Conceived, directed, and edited by our team, the film takes audiences into the Sine-Saloum region of Senegal, where local communities are working to restore fragile coastal ecosystems while building more sustainable futures for the next generation.

At the heart of the story are women-led groups restoring Senegal’s mangrove forests—ecosystems that play a critical role in coastal protection, biodiversity, and the long-term wellbeing of local communities. The film follows these women as they plant mangroves, protect natural resources, and develop new economic opportunities that support both environmental resilience and family livelihoods.

Audiences gain an understanding of the vital connection between ecological preservation and community empowerment. The documentary illustrates how environmental leadership often begins at the grassroots level, driven by individuals whose daily actions create meaningful impact far beyond their immediate surroundings. By focusing on local voices and lived experiences, the film demonstrates how collective action can become a powerful response to climate and environmental challenges.

The project also highlights the importance of sustainable economic development, particularly for women in rural communities. Through their work, these groups are not only helping restore critical ecosystems, but also strengthening food security, creating income opportunities, and building resilience against the growing threats of coastal erosion and climate change.
